BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS
COMING TO OHKAY OWINGEH
The Ohkay
Owingeh community on Friday, September 30, 2005, received
confirmation from the U.S. Representative Tom Udall, D-NM,
that the Tribe will be the recipients of a $565,963.00 grant
provided from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA)
Broadband Community Connect program. The grant will be
utilized by Ohkay Owingeh to connect twelve (12) community
facilities and ninety (90) tribal residences to high-speed
Internet service.
"It is through
grant programs like this that we are helping to close the
economic digital divide by promoting equal access to the
Internet for all Americans." --Udall.
Broadband or
high-speed Internet access - is provided by a series of
technologies that give users the ability to send and receive
data at volumes and speeds far greater than current Internet
access over traditional telephone lines. Broadband also
offers life-enhancing applications, such as distance learning,
remote medical diagnostics and the ability to work from home
more effectively.
